A. Below-the-breasts measurement

This measurement is the diameter of your bust right under your breasts.  Use a fabric measuring tape and place it right under your breasts.  Make sure the measuring tape is laid horizontally across your back (look in a mirror or ask someone to help you).  Ensure you don’t capture any of the breast tissue while measuring.

Write this measurement down and locate the corresponding bra band size in the chart below (the second column, using the French system):

B.   Determining your cup size:

First, measure your bust size, wearing a well fitting bra (preferably non-padded) and using a fabric measuring tape. Place it at the fullest part of your breasts. Ensure that that the tape is placed horizontally across your back (you might want to have someone help you or to check yourself in the mirror).  Don’t pull the tape too snuggly, ensure that there's some wiggle room.

• Write the results and calculate the difference between your below-the-bust measurement and your bust measurement.  This difference will be the basis for your cup size in the chart below.

C. What nursing bra size should you select if you're still pregnant ?

• It’s not easy to answer this question, as different women’s bodies will evolve differently.
• Bra band size: during pregnancy your rib cage will usually expand a bit (to leave enough room for the growing baby). That means that you might gain one or two sizes in bra band: for example from 95 to 100, or to 105.  However your rib cage will contract back to its pre-pregnancy size in the weeks following the birth.  If you buy a nursing bra at the end of your pregnancy, make sure to buy one with enough hooks that it can be adjusted down when your rib cage returns to its normal size.
• Cup size: most women will gain one cup size when nursing, as compared to the cup size they wear at the 8th month of pregnancy – however not all women do.  Therefore it’s key to pick a nursing bra that allows some room to grow (or not grow.)
• Nursing the first few weeks:  During the first weeks of breastfeeding your breasts will be very sensitive and will continue to evolve.  It will take a while before the milk production stabilizes.  In the meantime your breasts will change size, sometimes dramatically, during a single day.  For these first week it’s key to pick a nursing bra that’s very soft and stretchy, and yet supportive.  The Bella Materna bras are ideal for that purpose, as they adapt to changing cup sizes (each bra fits two different sizes: C/D, E/F (DD/E in UK sizing), etc.)
• Nursing after the first few weeks: after several weeks, your breast size will stabilize.  This will be a good time to measure yourself again and assess if you need a different size of nursing bras, and to consider slightly more elegant fabrics such as the Amoralia or Made In Femme bras in satin and lace.
